Point Blank

2018-2020

Project Statement

Gun violence in mainstream news and entertainment media is normalized in America.  The brutality surrounding weapons is augmented; it is romanticized while we observe from relative safety.  The ease at which I am able to access a considerable array of weapons disgusts me, yet allows me to achieve variety in the damage from piece to piece.  I shoot clay forms while they are still wet. The moment of impact forever lingers in the material, haunting, and displaying just how damaging a single shot can be. The material is left bare in the kiln, allowing for flashing to emphasize the forms.  Like a voyeur, one regards the drama while personally removed from its infliction, illuminating the innate love of watching the aftermath from violence, as long as we ourselves remain in the secure façade of our surroundings.
